Most of us have a “Peter” somewhere in our lives. That impulsive, impetuous personality which can either be captivating, or overbearing, or even obnoxious. At first, we see Peter as brash, opinionated, obstinate, even questioning Jesus’ actions. But if we look at the other side of Peter—
we see someone who wore his heart and soul on the sleeve of his tunic. He was loyal and devout to a fault, and faithful at least as far as the rooster crowed. Protective and bold, he impulsively sliced off the ear of Malthus, the High Priest’s servant, and with just a touch Jesus immediately healed him. (Another miracle before their very eyes, and yet they still refused to accept Him as Lord and Savior).
Peter was someone you wanted as a witness for the defense. His allegiance and steadfastness would convince even the most strident doubter. . “But Peter insisted emphatically, even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” Mark 14:31 Matt. 26:35. Peter’s will was bolder than his courage, and like all of humanity, Peter was a broken man. His hefty physical appearance and intrepid demeanor had its share of fissures and cracks. His three -pronged denial of Jesus was indeed his downfall, but it also begs the question, “What would I have done that dark and tenebrous night?” Oh, but how we love and forgive Peter for his humanness. Unlike Judas, Peter was grounded in Jesus’ love. He could have wallowed in his guilt and shame. But by God’s Grace, he was able to overcome his betrayal and instead set about the more important business of building the Church. How appropriate that the Greek name for “Peter” means “Rock , “And I will tell you that you are Peter, and on this “Rock”, I will build My Church.” Matt 16:18.
Dear Lord Jesus, How much we are like Your beloved Peter. We stumble over ourselves at every turn. We fail to stand up for You when You are defiled. Give us the courage we need to be loyal and faithful followers of Your Word. And should the rooster crow, let us be assured of Your Love and Forgiveness. In Your Name, we pray.
